OLT (Optical Line Termination) represents a basic element of passive optical network. Between OLT and endpoint device at the customer is located only passive optical infrastructure of type point - multipoint.

Optical infrastructure has two levels, primary level is part of a network between OLT and splitting point. Secondary level is a part behind this point. The splitting point is represented by passive optical splitter with a split ratio up to 1:256. Point-to-multipoint (P2MP) network has many advantages against point-to-point (P2P) networks. From the fact that they saves fibers in primary part of passive optical network to fact that they saves ports on OLTs.

Next advatage is that they reduce amount of active components in a network between Central Ofiice and the end customer. This avoids the need of power supply points and electricity meters in access network and basements of apartment buildings which leads to savings of energy.

Next Generation Passive Optical Network (NG-PON)

The G.987.x series (XG-PON1) specifications issued by ITU-T in 2010 supports an asymmetric speed of 10Gbps downstream and 2.5Gbps upstream.

Evolving from the GPON, the XG-PON1 technology allows smooth migration from GPON to XG-PON1 by leveraging legacy ODN resources and by increasing a small amount of ODN equipment; thus meeting network evolution requirements and promoting 100M+ access bandwidth with minor changes to the legacy network architecture and at low costs.

XG-PON1 is also the basis for NG-PON2, which supports migrating to TWDM-PON through multi-wavelength overlapping. The NG-PON2 technology is leveraged to upgrade legacy network capacity to build elastic and sustainable networks and to provide 1000M or above bandwidth for subscribers.

ZTE takes the lead in XG-PON1

ZTE is the first vendor to provide 8 ports XG-PON1 card based on ASIC chipset. It supports transmitting 1PPS+ToD signals, implements clock synchronization, and employs pluggable optical transceiver modules.
